2021 NHL Draft: 5 under-the-radar American players to watch

Ufko is a solid defensive defenseman with good positioning habits, a smart stick, and good gap control to shut down opponent transitions and zone entries. He displays some great senses and is highly capable at shutting down the rush with an excellent gap, good contact, and a sharp poke check. His ability to maintain a gap and close space for oncoming attackers is quite impressive and helps to ensure the puck stays to the safer areas of the ice in his zone. Ufko displays competence in being able to transition the puck with smart passing plays through the neutral zone. He’s an agile skater who is elusive enough to navigate through the neutral zone to create offensive zone entries. He has an ability to change direction quickly and is able to play at a high pace to keep up with opponents. Ufko is a good shooter with an accurate, powerful one-timer. He’s able to pick corners from the point and consistently get shots through traffic on net. One of Ufko’s biggest weapons is his vision, consistently finding passing lanes and passing through traffic on target. He makes effective passes in all zones to keep puck possession and control, not forcing passes when it’s not necessary. He’s very mobile on the blue line and is constantly looking for open space to give his teammates a passing option. He has good patience with the puck and understands what to do under pressure, making smart plays to find space away from opponents, rarely creating turnovers. He is consistently reading the play in the defensive zone and is effective at identifying the open man and taking away his space. He is actively looking to block passing lanes with his stick and is willing to block shots when he needs to. He struggles to battle with bigger opponents and isn’t as effective because of his lack of strength. But he’s still able to be physical and make hits, only doing so when appropriate. His forward skating lacks much in the way of speed or urgency. However, he knows he’s not a fast player and has long slow strides, often staying back of the play giving himself plenty of time to adjust to oncoming players. Ufko sometimes struggles handling the puck in-tight spaces and doesn’t always have full control, making it easier to steal from him.
